Kid's View connects kids to their community through art.

Kid's View Cooks will will introduce kids to photography, local food gardening and cooking this Fall through a series of trips to local food gardens and a community kitchen where they will prepare their own recipes. Kids will learn basic photographic composition and technical controls of digital photography at Prairie’s Northside studio. Students will then travel to local food gardens to learn about how different foods are raised, harvested and turned into healthy recipes. After photographing local farms and community gardens, students will work under the guidance of a local chef in the community kitchen at the Emanuel Community Center to develop and photograph their own dishes using locally sourced foods. At the end of the program, kids will create their own cookbooks using recipes developed by the Kid’s View team and hold a public exhibit of their images.

All supplies, equipment and materials are provided. Staff will consist of David Rosenthal, Prairie's Director, Luke Ebener, the director of Permaganic, Inc. a local urban food garden and Prairie volunteers.

Summer, 2010

Kid's View Summer, 2010 program, Fantastic Worlds is full. Our adventure starts on August 2.

A roaring good time will be had by all as Kid's View leads students this Summer through an adventure created by students themselves. We'll assemble miniature sets at various locations in Northside using possessions from home, items from Prairie's "Big Box" of miscellaneous treasures and other found objects to tell fantastic stories.

Students will photograph their miniature worlds using point and shoot film cameras provided by Prairie and will learn how to develop your own film and make prints in Prairie's on-site darkroom.

At the end of the class, we'lll create miniature "zines" using the images we've created and other graphic elements to tell fantastic stories.

Previous Kid's View classes which took place during the school year are longer term programs which connect kids to their communities through collaborations with other community organizations.

In the Fall of 2009, Kid's View worked with four Northside community organizations to provide kids with an opportunity to explore their world and express their opinions about important issues. Kid’s View: On Assignment  students learned about the value of family arts enrichment and its impact on relationships at Happen, Inc. They learned about locally grown produce and community markets at Northside Farmer’s Market. Churches Active in Northside (CAIN) gave students a glimpse into how critical basic needs including food and shelter are gathered and distributed to those in need and Visionaires and Voices gave students an opportunity to learn about the unique art created by developmentally disabled artists.
After learning about and photographing the activities of one of these community partners, students selected and refined a small portfolio of images which expressed their personal visions. These images were used by partner organizations in their own publications and web sites. Images were also shown on the Kid’s View web site (cincinnatikidsview.com) and were featured in an exhibit at Prairie Gallery at the conclusion of the project. Kid's View began in the Spring of 2009 with Kid's View: The Mill Creek Expedition which connected students to environmental restoration projects on the Mill Creek being conducted by The Mill Creek Restoration Project. Take a look at the work from that class online.
